The Creative Spirit is an expression of our founder Lisa's love for sewing, but also of the deeper joy that comes from creating and fully enjoying the process. This can only truly happen when life slows down and every step is seen as an important part of the journey. ✂
Lisa founded The Avid Seamstress, an award winning sewing pattern brand in 2015. The brand was created from a deep love of sewing and the absolute joy that comes from making beautiful garments. At the heart of Lisa’s philosophy is the belief that sewing should be savoured - from laying out the pattern pieces, to pinning and cutting the fabric, through to the final stitches. Each stage is just as meaningful as the finished garment.
Through the creative sewing workshops Lisa began hosting, it became clear that something special was happening. As the day unfolded, guests naturally began to slow down, relax and immerse themselves in the rhythm of sewing. This revealed an opportunity to offer something deeper than a single day workshop - a retreat where sewists could step away from the demands of everyday life and enjoy dedicated time for themselves.

Meditation plays an important role in Lisa’s daily life and has helped her appreciate the beauty of the present moment. By combining the principles of slow sewing with moments of quiet reflection, a new way of experiencing the craft began to emerge - and from this, The Creative Spirit was created.
Our retreats are centred around sewing, rest and relaxation in beautiful settings where guests are warmly welcomed and thoughtfully cared for. With gentle morning meditations, massage treatments, nourishing food and a few magical surprises along the way, each retreat is designed to leave guests feeling restored, inspired and full of creative energy.
